…a self-avowed flag waver
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t feel proud to be an American.
I still well up during that scene in Mel Gibson’s movie “The Patriot,” which I watch every July 4, when Mel’s character rides to catch up with his fellow soldiers, waving the tattered flag that his deceased son had repaired.
America is still an experiment like none other before, and as such, she’s had her failures—we all know what they are. And I dare say she will certainly endure future mistakes, but with God’s grace, she will persist. The framers of our Constitution designed a nation not just to survive, but to learn and grow from its shortcomings. They built a framework of checks and balances, ensuring that the spirit of liberty could withstand the test of time, even in the face of adversity.
While the path may not always be straight and easy, the promise of a more perfect union remains—a beacon for all who strive for justice and freedom.
Now, I didn’t understand all that as an eight-year-old, anxious to watch the country celebrate my birthday—yes, it’s July 4th—at the local fireworks show. Family gathered around me, the barbecue delivered up burgers and hotdogs, and the park table was decked with chips, salads, drinks, and birthday cake. Those precious memories are forever fixed in my mind and heart.
Many people today are so caught up in their political passions, they’re unable to take a moment and step back to celebrate our amazing nation, like we all did those years ago. Perhaps next year, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, will usher in a time of greater national unity. I hope so.
In the meantime, Karen and I will revel in the blessings we enjoy by virtue of where we live and pray that other countries across the globe will dedicate themselves to the principles that guide America.
Before Karen retired as an elementary school teacher, a great anthem by George M. Cohan was often sung by the kids. I hope it still is…
“You’re a grand old flag, you’re a high-flying flag, and forever in peace may you wave
You’re the emblem of the land I love, the home of the free and the brave
Ev’ry heart beats true, under red, white and blue, where there’s never a boast or brag
But should old acquaintance be forgot, keep your eye on the grand old flag.”
Happy July 4th everybody!
