Days ago, America celebrated the birthdays of two brilliant singers, songwriters, and musicians that changed the landscape of popular music forever.

Sir Paul McCartney, one of the most successful composers and performers of all time, who gained worldwide fame as co-lead vocalist, co-songwriter, and bassist for The Beatles, turned 80 on June 18. And Brian Wilson, co-founder of The Beach Boys, called a genius for his innovative approaches to song composition and his mastery of recording techniques—the co-writer of McCartney’s favorite song of all time, “God Only Knows”—turned 80 on June 20.

Those of us who have lived long enough will never forget the screaming fans that welcomed the four lads from Liverpool onto Ed Sullivan’s TV stage with their first song, “All My Loving” (Feb. 9, 1964). Or how The Beach Boys’ first hit, “Surfin’ USA” in 1963 ushered in the California sound of the youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance.

The music from both these pop icons still entertains, standing the test of time and relevance, and is popular among the generations that preceded and followed their songs.

One musical genius from England and one from the United States. History will long take note of their contributions. Happy birthday, Paul and Brian!
